Don't Give Up

Miguel has proven to be the dominant force in our Crossfit Trivia game. But, even if you still have no points, don't give up! There are still 6 more questions to go and they will progressively be worth more and more points. Keep up the good work!

Carb-loading not the most efficient way to prepare for exercise? And eating after a workout can facilitate recovery? Hmm....Whodathunk? Check out the article Here

Crossfit Trivia Question #9 (9 points): What is the "California" front squat? and what is our primary reason for not using it?

W.O.D Thursday 6/5/08

Two minutes of each:
Row
Dumbbell Thrusters (m: 30 each, w: 20 each)
Medicine Ball Cleans (m: 20, w: 14)

The california front squat

"involves less wrist flexibility than the standard hand position, and proportionately less security on the shoulders. It is not as safe at heavy weights."

"The crossed-arms position [of the front squat] relies entirely on the elbow position and completely loses the stability effect provided by the hands. Doing front squats this way is tantamount to just holding your hands out in front of you with the bar balanced on the delts."

Also, I suppose it is likely that the clean grip provides cues to keep your shoulders active and your back set so that you don't collapse forward and are less tempted to drift to your toes. The crossed arm position lacks these cues.

I may never get the right answer but I sure do learn a lot!

Take it away Miguel...

matt, you quick bastard.

i'm resting tomorrow, so i'll be making this one up on friday. should be fun...

Matt great job, but don't stop there. You're so close. Think, when we front squat, why would we use the clean grip?

kenshen said...

to practice for when we do squat cleans? i guess it's just good practice to be in the rack position for other stuff too, like power cleans or thrusters.

haha, considering my relatively new introduction to olympic weightlifting (and, essentially, grips, etc.), I'll leave this one to you guys =)

Colin, what should we be posting for tomorrow? Also, let me know if you'll be around the gym in the morning and maybe we can all get together for the workout--looks good!

Ken,
correct. The california front squat is a dead-end road. It's development leads into no other movements. By using the clean grip, we are developing the position that we will be in with cleans, thrusters, and squatting most objects in general.

I am not sure if and how I should divide the 9 points as Matt answered my first question correctly, and Ken answered my second question correctly. Any ideas?

Faith,
post your time for the mile, as well as your total reps for all the exercises (count calories for the row). And I may be there to cheer you guys on at the end of your workout, but I am so sleep deprived that I don't see myself getting there any earlier than 8:30. Good luck!

Faith- Are you going to the gym at 8am? I was thinking I might go to the track at 8am run the mile and then finish the rest of the workout at the gym.

Faith said...

Hey Ashleigh--Yeah, I'll be at the gym a little before 8. I'll probably do the whole workout there because I have class there at 9. I'll see if I can catch you at the track or hopefully we'll cross paths at the gym...

I think I should get all the points for looking so damn sexy (?!?!?!?!?) in that wonderful photo.

Thanks Colin....

I'll take 4. Ken should get 5. Also, we should deduct points from Miguel as his sexiness is surely distracting us all!

PS - when are we making a crossfit SB calendar?

kenshen said...

matt should probably get 8 points because of his playgirl avatar.

This was a hard workout! I was drenched in the end! It's 81 degrees in PA and very Humid. It feels like 100 degrees here.

Had to do the workout inside. Keep them coming!

Made up yesterday's deadlifts:

3x 275/285/295/305/315/325/325 (PR)

Matt and Ken,
Since I'm in a good mood, I'll give you both 7 points. Don't ask how I came up with that number...

Dana,
Great job! Us Santa Barbarians have it easy with our perfect climate.

Ken, interested in having some company tomorrow for this workout?

Faith said...

Woke up this morning all set to go, but my back was killing me from deadlifts yesterday. Plus, it would've been my fourth day working out, so took today off...

Getting ready for some good fun tomorrow though =)

kenshen said...

matt, definitely. early morning not so good since i think i'll be out late-ish tonight, but how about mid-morning, like 10? or we can play it by ear; i just have to work around a meeting that's at an as-yet-undetermined time. anyone else making it up tomorrow?

Matthew J. Crossley said...

I have a final from 9:00-11:00. Free after that.

Faith said...

I'll probably be at the gym earlier tomorrow and try to avoid the crowd considering all the different parts of the workout. Probably same time though, around 8am. If anyone wants to join, it's always great to have more people =)
